TL's Favorite Freeware

This is a list of the free software that I find to be most useful.

Web Toolkit

HTML-Kit Boasting over 400 plugins, this rich framework helps me view and change HTML, Java Script, PHP and edit CSS. I can work on files on the server. Even thought I use b2evolution, osCommerce and Joomla, I still need to edit. HTML-Kit combined with the next app makes working pretty easy. A commercial version is available.

Filezilla This is a great free cross-platform ftp program available in many languages. I like it because you can configure file types outside of windows so you can view or edit file-types using your favorite editor. What you can't do with HTML-Kit, you can arrange to get it done with Filezilla.

Color Cop is a very light stand alone executable that identifies and converts colors to Hexadecimal color codes. Since many instances of the program can be ran simultaneously, its' icon is in my Quick Launch.

I use IE7, Firefox2, and Opera9. Yes, I use these to check how things look. But that's not all. Every since Microsoft came out with IE7 I've been using it as my general browser. I've enjoyed tabbed browsing for quite a while with Opera. I used Opera much more than Firefox, but now, working on the web, I use Firefox. Both Opera and Firefox do something EI doesn't: they can open all the bookmarks in a folder at one time. That can be fun!

Security

Avast Antivirus Free for personal use, this virus scanner is top rate, updating at least once per day.

Spybot Search and Destroy A spyware scanning tool regularly updated.

CCleaner I credit this program with keeping my 3 year install of Windows XP Pro SP2 running smoothly. I don't turn my main machine off very often. It runs very well. Not only can it get rid of files you don't use, but it can also get rid of unused Registry Entries as well. Also can fix those references stuck in Add/Remove Programs as well as run associated uninstallers.

ZoneAlarm Free Check Point offers many differing levels of protection. If all you need is a good free software firewall, then the free version is fine for non-commercial use.

Graphics

Paint.Net The only thing this application lacks is an airbrush. If I want to use one I use the copy of Paintshop Pro that came with HomeSite4 a million years ago: version 4.15(1998). The next version of Paint.Net is reportedly supposed to have an airbrush. We'll see. I can't stand The GIMP.

Utilities

Synergy This wonderful piece of software allows you to connect two or more computers on your network with one mouse and one keyboard. It can load at startup. It is multi-platform so you can do this with a Windows Machine and a Linux Rig.

thClock - The Talking Clock I haven't looked for an alarm clock since Jan. '07. That said, this clock is cool for those who wish to customize the alarm sounds and have a clock do things like tell you when it is about to shut down your machine. I use it when I'm gone from home yet I have TV to record with my main machine.

Server Side

b2volution Requires PHP and MySQL, this installs on your website. It helps you manage your blog.

Joomla is a content management system. You have to get to know it and be willing to learn. Once you do you will know how powerful it is. Known the world over. I didn't know what a "content management system" was until I searched for blogware. At that time I thought there had to be something that makes it easy to manage databases of links and looks and things. I said "do I really have to re-invent the wheel?" The answer was no.

osCommerce I sell things. Therefor I need a shopping cart. I don't have very much money so I need an affordable solution. osCommerce is affordable. It's free.

Games

Halo

Currently a Member of ÑE» clan as ÅNGEL. We use Xfire and TeamSpeak.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

Other

DD-WRT If you have a wireless router that is capable of running this Firmware, and you feel brave enough to risk bricking it, install it. I bricked my Wrt54g. I unbricked it so everything's okay and better than ever. DD-WRT offers better control over security and even your radio's transmit power. Some routers are better without it. Currently I use it for a "client-bridge".
